Import AOL Mail contacts to Hotmail / Outlook.com

Export AOL contacts to Outlook.com With AOL Mail, you can export your entire address book as a "CSV" file: that format, which stands for "Comma-separated values", is basically just a text file. That allows you to import your AOL contacts into your Outlook.com account, in just a few steps (Hotmail supports both import and export of CSV files). Since this is a universal format, you can even edit the exported file manually, with the most basic spreadsheet program. (Unlike Gmail, AOL doesn't let you export select contacts - but you can easily delete rows (people) using such an app!) Exporting your contacts doesn't affect them in any way: AOL just creates a copy of them, and formats them for download - nothing removed from your address book!

Quick Steps to import AIM / AOL contacts into Outlook.com:

  1. 1 First, export your contacts from AOL Mail.
  2. 2 Then, login to your Outlook.com inbox.
  3. 3 Click on the grid icon (top left) and choose "People".
  4. 4 Click on the "Start import" button at the bottom of the page.
  5. 5 Click on the "Other" link.
  6. 6 Navigate to the CSV file you exported from AOL, and click Upload.
  7. 7 Follow the duplicate contacts / merge prompts.

Note: AOL Mail will export your entire address book, regardless of the contacts whose checkbox is selected or not. This checkboxes are designed for other functions (like creating contact groups).

Download your address book as CSV file

Click on the Export button: when the dialog prompt opens (how it looks depends on your web browser and operating system). Choose an easy-to-find download location for the file, like your Desktop, and optionally type a more descriptive file name than the AOL's default of "contacts.csv". Since this is essentially a plain-text file, the download will be very short, regardless of address book size! Save your AOL Mail contacts download!

Gnumeric - free spreadsheet program Tip: if you want to edit the CSV file you just exported, and you don't have Excel, Numbers, or a LibreOffice / OpenOffice productivity suite installed on your computer, you can download "Gnumeric", a free and standalone spreadsheet app which can handle editing CSV files. (I use it all the time on PCs that don't have any version of Office installed - it's an awesome program, especially for the price :) The latest version compiled for Windows is available here.
